Mudrunner is an off-road driving simulator game by the Russian studio Saber Interactive. In this simulator, you will experience riding heavy special purpose off-road trucks across Taiga and hard-to-reach rural areas. You can download Mudrunner for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Though Mudrunner game visuals aren’t bright and vibrant, they look realistic enough for a driving simulator. Developers focused on physics and credibility of vehicles as they succeeded. Havok engine allowed them to tune every detail of each car to make it look alive. Road surfaces, such as mud, sand, and asphalt, are highly detailed and interactive too.
Mudrunner gameplay may seem dull if you don’t like huge off-road trucks, but if you do, be ready for amazing slow action. The main game is set in Northern Russia at some logging areas. You work as a driver who receives new missions every day. There are several types: delivery missions on which you have to carry wood, fuel or water, and exploration objectives on which you’re supposed to build routes to hard-to-reach places. All of them are immersive and atmospheric, but it would be cool if developers add more content, because it may get boring to complete the same tasks for several times.
All vehicles in the basic version are from former Soviet Union countries. There are 19 cars in Mudrunner and 9 more in Mudrunner: American Wilds Edition. Every car has real physical properties and requires an individual approach to handling and fuel consumption. You also must avoid damaging them, because a broken wheel can fail the entire mission.
We tried to play with gamepad and keyboards for this Mudrunner review, and both types are similarly convenient. Handling of each vehicle is carefully replicated, so it’s always a new experience when you buy a new one. We thought that it would be possible to use Switch’s controllers to play split-screen co-op, but it didn’t work out.

You can complete Mudrunner full game in about 3 hours. If you want more gameplay, download Mudrunner: American Wilds DLC to get more objectives, cars, and locations. This game is an excellent relaxing time killer. Challenging slow-paced missions are incredibly addictive due to realistic physics, and atmospheric northern woods.
The Bottom Line
There’s no other simulator like Mudrunner. It provides you an exclusive opportunity to drive realistic heavy off-road trucks. It’s incredibly detailed and presents the same quality of graphics on all platforms. It’s also the only modern game with Soviet machines.
Download Mudrunner to play the most close-to-reality offroad driving simulator. It’s one of the most qualitative indie simulators so far.
