Alice in Wonderland is a 2D visual novel game by Brave Rock Games. It’s an adaptation of the original story by Lewis Carroll wrapped into the digital cover. All texts and dialogues are voiced by professional narrators. You can download Alice in Wonderland for Wii U on the official Nintendo Store.
Alice in Wonderland game has static illustrations of the narrative. All of them are created in a unique technique. Artists made photos of different environments to create backgrounds and painted characters over photos. The result looks very exciting. It’s surprising to see cartoony characters in the real world. Sometimes characters are animated to emphasize emotions and dynamics of the episode. The style of arts doesn’t copy any of the existing books, but it won’t match everyone’s taste.
Alice in Wonderland gameplay is similar to any other interactive book. You have to press play, and then just listen to the narrator or read the story yourself. Fonts are big enough to read them at arm’s length, but it would be good if developers added font settings. The high quality of narration is provided by professional voice actors, so as the strong immersion into the plot. The original story by Lewis Carroll is preserved, but it’s slightly shortened to simplify perception for small children. The drawback of this game is that it lacks interactiveness. The only thing that you can do is turn the pages over to read further. Mini-games could help readers to understand the story deeper.
The latest version of the game used for this Alice in Wonderland review has elementary controls. You have to tap the screen or use the arrow buttons to turn pages back and forth. If you have Wii Remotes, you can connect your console to the TV and play Alice in Wonderland without the need to hold the Wii U GamePad.
Replay Value: 4
Though Alice in Wonderland creators claim that it’s a game, it’s much closer to a visual novel. This great story provides a lot of space for inventive ideas. Together with powerful Wii U hardware, it could give something much more impressive and replayable. It’s still a well-illustrated e-book for children anyway.
The Bottom Line
Alice in Wonderland reading game is controversial. On the one hand, it has quality illustrations and professional narration. On the other hand, it lacks interactive elements very much. There’s nothing to touch and move, so the feedback is shallow. The good thing is that developers used the original text of the novel. It’s highly recommended to kids as one of the most exciting fantasy books.
