Limbo is a 2D adventure quest platform game with survival horror elements by Danish studio Playdead. In the game, you play as a nameless boy who wakes up at the hell's edge where he struggles to find his sister amongst scared and dead bodies on the way. You can download Limbo for PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, iOS, and Android.
Limbo game is one of the best examples of Box2D usage. It has a unique black-and-white level design. All objects and characters are totally black, so you can see them only because the background is grey or white. Excellent placement of object blur makes the world look and feel voluminous. The animation quality is also very high. Monsters look very creepy!
Limbo gameplay belongs to the 2D platform genre, so it's mostly based on physical interactions between the character and the environment. You can run, climb small ledges, ropes, or ladders, and move objects to solve quests. Though the game has beautiful visuals, it's hard to stand still and admire, because the soundscape makes you feel stalked.
The entire world of Limbo horror game is full of threats. You can come across giant spiders, bear traps, evil children with stones or flaming wheels, and worms that can tell you what to do and lead you to death if you don't reach bright areas by accident. Developers call the method of completion of their game as the method of trial and deaths. Every death scene includes realistic gore.
Similarly to other famous platformers that we compared for this review, the game offers simple navigation and semi-automated interactions. It means that you don't have to press anything to move a box, but just walk toward it. The title is supported by a wide range of platforms, but there's no difference on which one to play.
Replay Value: 4.5
Limbo full game walkthrough takes from 3 to 7 hours, depending on how quickly you solve the quests. The plot of Limbo feels empty sometimes because there's not much to discover. It's a pleasure to explore this noir world, but it doesn't provide any non-linear progression and side quests. For this reason, the game is exciting only for a single walkthrough. It also lacks a co-op multiplayer mode and quick-play levels. On the other hand, ambiguity has its chic.
The Bottom Line
Hopefully, this Limbo review helped you to decide whether to buy it or not. There are no analogs to the title. It's still one of the most gloomy and admirable platform adventures on the game market. It's unique art style, and the mysterious universe will attract players for years like a good novel. Moreover, due to low Limbo system requirements, it's accessible on a wide range of gaming platforms.
