Jalopy is an indie driving simulator game developed by Minskworks. During the game yo have to drive an old socialist GDR car Laika 601 Deluxe. This tin can is hardly able to make at least 60 MPH, and you must repair it every now and then. Download Jalopy for your Windows PC to have a nice slow trip across Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey, and more.
Jalopy game visuals are rather casual and slightly comic. This universe has realistic object proportions, but very plain surfaces without any shadows and textures. Nevertheless, the atmosphere of a lonely faraway journey is very tangible. The way seems endless. Devastated towns are not very hospital, so you are likely to hit the road again as fast as possible.
Jalopy gameplay consists of several parts. The most significant is driving across the Eastern Bloc. That’s how they call the part of Europe where Hungary, Germany, CSFR, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Else, you have to rest in motels, pass the border control, trade, and many more activities.
Your pimped Laika requires a tender approach. You always have to watch the dashboard to be sure that it won’t stop in the middle of nowhere. No matter how you try to do that, it will stop anyway … However, there is a way out. You may come across abandoned cars, crates with details or tools, and scrapyards. Be careful to sell off or use some of the objects, because they may appear illegal in the next country.
There is no regular user interface in Jalopy driving simulator game. You have to use the aim and press the left mouse button to interact with everything. To start the vehicle, you have to turn the ignition key and remove handbrake. And don’t forget about refueling!
Testing of keyboard-plus-mouse and gamepad inputs for this Jalopy review showed that the first one is much more convenient. The mouse provides you with more precise aiming. That is crucial for the gameplay as you always have to interact with small objects.
Replay Value: 4.5
The walkthrough of Jalopy full game may take from 4 to 5 hours. There are no random encounters or variable story branches. However, It is worth at least a single walkthrough as it’s a unique linear experience. It’s not a very detailed game, but the high level of immersion makes exploration of non-textured roads and towns extremely interesting.
Jalopy is a unique driving simulator. It allows you to experience an exciting journey across the countries of the former Eastern Bloc. Try to beat the loneliness during a thousands-mile trip and finish your way on the dilapidated European car. Though It’s not a detailed next-gen project, it presents a very immersive atmosphere.
