Angels of Death is a horror adventure game by the Japanese indie developer Hoshikuzu KRNKRN, also known as Makoto Sanada. It’s an immersive story about a lost girl who wants to die in a strange building that’s full of killers for some reason. You can download Angels of Death exclusively on Steam for Windows PC.
Angels of Death game is designed with the RPG Maker engine, so it’s a top-down 2D adventure with rather simple visuals. However, game arts create an immersive atmosphere of despair, and deadly threats hiding behind corners here and there. The entire game is prevalently in hues of blue, grey, and red to emphasize the doomy plot.
There are 2 main characters: Rachel Gardner and Isaac Foster. Rachel witnesses a murder and gets into a hospital for counseling, but wakes up in an unknown place. There she meets Isaac “Zack,” a serial killer. She decides that the only way out of her suffering is death, so she offers Zack to kill her in exchange for her help in escaping the mysterious building. Rachel is so apathetic and calm that Isaac has no interest in killing her.
Angels of Death gameplay mostly consists of dialogues and exploration. You play Rachel to explore dozens of rooms where you can find notes. They include information about characters and clues to quests. You aim to help her to restore her lost memories and manage to get out of the building. The story is full of unexpected twists and original solutions, so it’s incredibly exciting to go deeper and deeper to solve the riddle of the main characters’ souls.
We tried to play with keyboard-plus-mouse and a gamepad for this Angels of Death review. The gamepad input is supported only partially, so you may feel inconvenience in the menu and lack some commands. Keyboard controls are also rather unusual, but you can reassign buttons if you want.
Replay Value: 4.5
You can complete Angels of Death full game in around 4 hours, depending on how good you are in solving quests. The extraordinary plot of the game is worth a reward for originality and dialogues. There’s not much sense in completing the game twice though, because it’s rather linear and lets you figure out everything.
The Bottom Line
Angels of Death is a kind of an exquisite Japanese indie game that doesn’t pretend to amaze you with graphics and gameplay innovations but captures your mind with weirdness and immediacy. It’s a story that could be produced only in Japan. By the way, it influenced the media to create 12 volumes of manga, and 16 episodes of the anime adaptation.
Download Angels of Death if you’re like psychological and horror anime or want to experience a quality Japanese adventure horror game.
