Wells is a 2.5D side-scrolling action platformer game by Tower Up Studios. This game is a direct reference to run-and-gun steampunk franchises of the ’90s. You have to play for a nameless hero who fights against the terror of cruel bosses. The action takes place in a steam-powered fiction universe that looks a lot like Victorian Great Britain. You can download Wells for PC, and Xbox One.
Wells game has a very recognizable style, but the overall quality of visuals is relatively mediocre. The game supports static shading and window reflections, but the impression of flatness is still very strong. The textures are rather sharp, and the color palette corresponds to the classic steampunk guidelines. There are many copper details and red brickwork.
Wells gameplay copies traditional run-and-gun side-scrolling shooters, such as Contra, Metal Slug, and others series. For the vast majority of the time, you have to run and climb through levels with multiple floors. Enemies come from different places all the time, so you should never stop shooting. The can jump from above, run out of ambushes, and come on moving platforms.
There are 2 basic types of enemies, such as mercenaries of the main antagonist Hyde, and his steam drones that can throw off barrels with fuel to explode you. However, you can shoot them above the heads of other enemies to kill them with explosions.
There are 5 types of weapon to master: a quick-firing revolver, a long-range rifle, a grenade launcher, a sub-machine gun, and a shotgun. All guns are brilliantly stylized and require you to use different tactics.
Controls in Wells shooter game work well with both gamepad and keyboard/mouse inputs. All your actions are running, jumping, and shooting. You are not required to be precise, and there are always enough bullets, so you can shoot offhand and feel sure that it will work out.
Replay Value: 4
Wells latest version walkthrough takes about 4 hours of clear gameplay. Unfortunately, there is nothing to explore and score. There is no leveling system, leaderboards, or something else to make you replay levels. Your character doesn’t even need any health upgrades as it’s very hard to kill him.
It’s an honest Wells review, so you have to know that the game is a one-off time killer. It lacks depth and non-linear twists that are almost obligatory for the genre. The shooting system is well-made, but all regular enemies are similarly week. Every boss is rather impressive, but you can figure out how to kill it in 15 minutes. If you like simple side-scrolling shooters, this game is for you.
Download Wells to get an easy platform shooter in an exciting steampunk setting. It’s a good time killer for fans of the genre.
Pros : Good level-design with recognizable style;
5 types of weapons to master;
Cons : No soundtrack during missions at all;
No leveling system.
