Professional Review

The Long Dark is an exploration adventure where you will have to solve complicated puzzles in the coldest northern surroundings. Released in 2017, it remains one of the toughest survival games up to this day. You can launch The Long Dark on PS4, Xbox One, Windows, Mac, and Linux. It’s still unavailable for mobile platforms.

Graphics: 3.5

Visuals are not the strongest point of the game, but with the gameplay that takes place during the longest nights, who cares? You won’t find the moving grass or the flashing icicles here, but the overall style of the game is pretty unique and helps you immerse into the dark and disquieting atmosphere. The Long Dark game size is 7GB so one may be surprised at how low budget its graphics feels. But be sure that, unlike with its visual predecessors, here it’ll work alright: the game looks retro but everything about it feels brand new.

Gameplay: 4.5

The Long Dark gameplay emphasizes on the single-player mode that challenges the players to bring forth the best adventure spirit to the forefront. Left alone in the lap of nature with all the coldness and darkness around, one has to use all their instincts to survive. It is solely up to the player to decide the ways in which the survival can be done. There are various dangers that Mother Nature imposes on the player and therefore, all the tackling has to be done solely without anybody’s help.

One can build certain weapons with the help of several materials lying here and there. A house needs to be built as well, which would act as the shelter for the player. The dangers can come anytime without warning, and the player must be attentive enough to the surroundings.

Controls: 4

Controls of the game feel a bit outdated in the beginning, but then you realize that they are very well thought-out. There’s a quick menu that lets you search your inventory for the things you need and a set of actions for each of them. From time to time, however, you will have to address the inventory screen as you cannot repair or eat your items from the quick menu. You can open the quick menu by holding the ‘space’ key while mouse clicks are the most important control features for you to move on the site. There’s also a shortcut keys system to quicken your firing and equipping processes.

Replay Value: 4

The Long Dark is not an ordinary game. You either love it or hate it. But if you love it, you will never get tired of playing it. First two episodes of the game were released in 2017, one after another, but the fans are still waiting for the third episode that’s said to be released later in 2019. There are three levels of difficulty, so if you’ve handled the easiest one (which hard as hell!), restart the game and get ready for more challenges!

The Bottom Line

Trippy and mysterious survival horror is one of the best ways to learn how Apocalypse feels: quiet, long and dark. The game is absolutely not for everyone as it is never easy and takes all your guts and stamina. Besides, its peculiarly outdated visuals and often harsh gameplay work for its iconic status but never for the devs profit. Care to try? The Long Dark latest version is available for PS4, Xbox One, macOS, Windows, and Linux, and you can easily download the game on Steam.

Conclusion

The Long Dark download takes a few minutes but it may a few years of your life to complete its 2 seasons breathtakingly difficult missions.
